13 – Marching With Caesar® – Rise of Germanicus

Just Released August 20, 2016!

Marching With Caesar - Rise Of GermanicusTitus Porcinianus Pullus has settled into life as a Centurion of the 1st Legion, stationed on the Rhine, but a revolt in his home province of Pannonia changes everything, both for him and for Rome. When the aging Augustus sends the young, untested Germanicus Julius Caesar to Pannonia at the head of a hastily assembled force, Tiberius summons Titus to return to his home province. Ostensibly sent to both advise and protect the youngster in whom the Princeps has placed so much hope, Titus quickly learns that Tiberius’ motives are, at best, suspect, when the Germanicus Legion is sent against the Maezei, the tribe that murdered Titus’ brother Sextus, the first in a series of events that required Titus’ transfer from his original Legion after he avenged Sextus’ death.

Consequently, once more, a member of the Pullus family finds himself embroiled in the machinations and maneuvering of the second most powerful man in Rome, as Tiberius tries to ensure that his position as likely heir to the aging Augustus is not challenged by a talented, charismatic young Roman, in the form of Germanicus. Ultimately, Titus will be faced with a choice–following his heart and helping Germanicus achieve fame and glory or heeding the implicit but clear orders from the man who controls his fate in Tiberius, who is threatened by the talented youngster.

2 – Marching With Caesar® – Conquest of Gaul

Marching With Caesar - Conquest Of Gaul Volume 2Marching With Caesar® – Conquest of Gaul is a first-person narrative, written in the form of a memoir as dictated to a scribe of Titus Pullus, Legionary, Optio, First Spear Centurion of Caesar’s 6th and 10th Legion. The memoir is written three years after his retirement as Camp Prefect, when Titus is 61 years old. Titus, along with his boyhood friend Vibius Domitius, joins the 10th Legion in the draft of 61 BC, when Gaius Julius Caesar is the governor of Spain. Titus and Vibius are assigned to a tent group, with seven other men who will become their closest friends during their times in the legion. Titus, Vibius and their comrades endure the harsh training regimen that made the legions the most feared military force in the ancient world. The 10th Legion is blooded in a series of actions in Spain, led by Caesar in a campaign that was the true beginning of one of the most brilliant military careers in history. Three years after joining the legions, the 10th is called on again, this time to be part of the subjugation of Gaul, one of the greatest feats of arms in any period of history. During the subsequent campaigns, the 10th cements its reputation as Caesar’s most favored and trusted legion, and is involved in most of the major actions during this period. Caesar Ascending – Invasion of Parthia

Caesar AscendingWhat if Gaius Julius Caesar had heeded that warning and the other signs leading up to the Ides and survived that day in March of 44 BC?

“A certain seer warned Caesar to be on his guard against a great peril on the day of the month of March which the Romans call the Ides; and when the day had come and Caesar was on his way to the senate-house, he greeted the seer with a jest and said: ‘Well, the Ides of March are come,’ and the seer said to him softly: ‘Ay, they are come, but they are not gone.” ~ Plutarch, Parallel Lives

This is the premise behind Caesar Ascending-Invasion of Parthia, which is the predecessor to Caesar Triumphant, an alternate history where Caesar, after his planned invasion of Parthia, continues marching east. Whereas Caesar Triumphant covers Caesar’s invasion of the Isle of Wa, now known as Japan, Caesar Ascending is set in 44 BC and tells the story of his planned invasion of Parthia, and includes the characters of the internationally bestselling Marching With Caesar series, featuring Titus Pullus.

Determined not to repeat the mistakes made by Caesar’s friend and fellow Triumvir Marcus Licinius Crassus, the Dictator has trained his Legions in tactics specifically designed to thwart the famed Parthian cataphracts and horse archers, but as Caesar and his army learns, the Parthians have been working on their own surprises, all in an attempt to destroy another Roman army and send a message to Rome that they are not the only world power.

Caesar Triumphant

Caesar Triumphant“A certain seer warned Caesar to be on his guard against a great peril on the day of the month of March which the Romans call the Ides; 6 and when the day had come and Caesar was on his way to the senate-house, he greeted the seer with a jest and said: ‘Well, the Ides of March are come,’ and the seer said to him softly: ‘Ay, they are come, but they are not gone.” ~Plutarch, Parallel Lives What if Gaius Julus Caesar had heeded those fateful words and survived that day in March of 44 BC? That is the underlying premise behind Caesar Triumphant, a story of a Caesar and his army that conduct his planned campaign against the Parthians…then just continues on a march of conquest that takes him to the very edge of the known world. The story opens with the last target of conquest: an island nation known then as the Isles of Wa, and what we know today as the country of Japan. It will be the final challenge of a remarkable career, but facing him and his battle-hardened Legions are a race of people as fiercely dedicated to the profession of arms, and fanatically devoted to their emperor as any foe Caesar and his Romans have ever faced. The Wa have never tasted defeat, repelling every attempted invasion of their sacred islands. In these warriors, has Caesar and his unstoppable force of an army finally met their match in the immovable object, in the form of the men of Wa, or will Caesar once again be triumphant? Caesar Triumphant is an alternative history, by the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed Marching With Caesar® series, R.W. Peake, featuring Titus Pullus, Legionary of Rome.

Not part of the Marching With Caesar® series, the story of Caesar Triumphant has its genesis from a blog I began in April of 2012, with the same title. The premise is based on my internal musings on the possible outcome of a clash between the Legions of Rome, and the samurai of Japan. While I wasn’t willing to invent time travel in order to match the men of Caesar’s Legions with the samurai of what is considered the Golden Age of the culture, the Tokugawa Shogunate, I was more than happy to invent an alternate history, one in which Julius Caesar heeds the warning of “The Seer” that while the Ides of March had come, they had not passed. In Caesar Triumphant, Caesar actually embarks on the campaign that he had been planning for some time, the invasion of Parthia, but then he just…keeps going east. Caesar Triumphant opens ten years after the Ides, with Caesar and his army, now composed of a polyglot of nations and cultures, poised to invade the last part of the known world, what was then called The Isles of Wa by the Han Dynasty.

Caesar Triumphant features the same characters as the Marching With Caesar® series, and was released on July 30, 2013.
